What is a dental tooth implant..?

A tooth implant is a metal blade or post which is surgically inserted into your jawbone. Some older implants were made of steel, but implants in current use are made of titanium with various surface coatings for different applications. Researchers are also looking at some ceramics as an alternative.

The titanium insert is biological stable, and is considered to be osteogenic, in that it encourages new bone formation. Your bone grows right onto your implant, forming a solid structure.

Appledore can then subsequently place single crowns, bridgework, or attachments to retain dentures on top of your implants.

The placement of implants helps to prevent the loss of your jawbone which naturally occurs with loss of teeth. As such it helps maintain the strength and shape of your jaws, and contributes to maintaining a youthful appearance.

Implants can be placed in almost anyone over 16.  They are not normally used in children, as their bones are not fully grown.

Imagine the scenario, Gatwick Airport, New Years eve, family flying out on a skiing holiday and I snap three teeth off on the front of my mouth that was formed as a bridge, put in 30 years ago ! No teeth, looking like Dracula and 30 minutes to boarding !

One call to Appledore, the following morning Dr Teresa day fixed a temporary bridge of 4 teeth (no mean feat), and back on a flight to Austria for a fantastic holiday. On my return, a more permanent temporary bridge was ready to be fixed, then a plan put in place for 4 implants to be fixed into my mouth.

Over the next 9 months, we went through a process of preparation, surgery and fixing, that eventually led to 4 brand new teeth, stronger than anything I had before and a very happy customer.

Although the process was not something you want to go through every week, the care taken by the whole team at Appledore made the experience somehow....enjoyable !
